Relive all the battles of the First Empire with Histwar: Les Grognards
The game comes with three editors that allows you to build and customize your armies, battle maps and military doctrines.

The constantly growing community around Histwar offers many Mods:

  • Waterloo and the Peninsular War expanding the theaters of operations (*)
  • Hundreds of orders of battle
  • A variety of maps to fight on
  • New textures for uniforms, ground, trees and structures

The patch 03b offers two different user interfaces to pick from for better control.

While awaiting the version 04a which will introduce a 1:1 scale (1 model for each soldier), version 03b will allow you to test a beta version(**) of this unprecedented scale.

Watching a 1500 infantry square, a charge of 1000 sabers, or an attack on a line of 2000 men will radically change your perception of a  Napoleonic battlefield.

Histwar: Les Grognards is the first and only tactical engine allowing such gameplay depth:

  • Putting you in charge of more than a hundred thousand men, represented by more than a hundred thousand models, on a battlefield expanding tens to hundreds of square kilometers.
  • The software offers 3 viewing modes to get a better understanding of the overall picture as well as diving into the tactical detail (3D, Symbolic 3D and 2D views).
  • The multiplayer battles can include up to 8 players on LAN and can also be played by email.

If you are looking for a fun historical simulation, look no more.

An intense development activity continues in order to always improve «HistWar : Les Grognards» :

  • A new interface is being developed
  • The gameplay evolves in order to increase the player immersion
  • The developments regarding Artificial Intelligence are underway
  • The Modders continue their work ... the last one, Madrussian mod, improves the landscape. Another team is working on a project to see here.

To recap, the PWGM team has built a complete package on the Peninsular War and dozens of scenarios are also proposing to replay many Napoleonic battles.

Interview with EricJ, "modder" on "HistWar : Les Grognards"

Published on 10/11/2010

Why "modding"?

"HistWar : Les Grognards" is not a classic game ; in addition to its historical accuracy on uniforms, orders of battle, tactics and behavior of units, this game provides gamers with interesting tools to create their own scenarios of Napoleonic battles : with its three editors (maps, orders of battle and doctrine) this game gives players the freedom and ease of "modding" incomparable. The interfaces are user friendly and allow gamers to create their first scenarios quickly. Under these conditions, "modding" becomes almost inevitable, so this has nothing to stress, but is instead part of the game.

More personally, the reasons that pushed me to "modding" are my interest in history (ie military). "Modding" actually fits in my historical research: the scenarios allow to restore the historic commitments, and to confront my sources and my understanding of these events with the "reality" of the game. So my approach of "modding" is limited to create historical scenarios. However, even if my primary motivation is to study history, gameplay is not forgotten! Of all my scripts, I publish only those that seem interesting from a fun perspective.

Finally, for a simple guy like me, expand the choices historical scenarios seems to be the most obvious way but also most necessary to help promote "HistWar : Les Grognards".

What are the difficulties of "modding"?

Unquestionably, the first problem and by far the largest, for "modding", is looking for historical information. The level of detail required for the scenarios of the game, is rarely achieved by the historical sources available to me. When the different sources do not overlap or contradict each other! This is truly a job for an historian in order to disentangle the fact from fiction...

This requirement in historical accuracy may seem unnecessary, but it is especially important for me : in order to make a scenario with "HistWar : Les Grognards", an order of battle and a map are sufficient. But to make a historical scenario, other elements are needed, I think. In principle, it seems to me a historical scenario must be designed to reproduce as faithfully as possible, the context and conditions of the battle, to immerse the player into the role that had played at the time the commander in chief of each army involved. The principle of the FPC, as I understood it...

That's why my scripts always include, in addition to orders of battle of each army involved and the map, historical information: in order to understand and immerse themselves in the scenario, players have, in my opinion, need an introduction to the historical context overall (political and strategic), but also to the immediate tactic context that causes the clash in these conditions. Similarly, I attach great importance to the initial historical placement of the units and of the entry point of the reinforcements on the historical map. I realize that this may appear to reduce the player's strategic options, but it is essential to realize the strategic and historical dynamics that led to this confrontation as I want to replay. The issue is not to make a historical and rigid scenario but to play : players will be free to apply their own orders and their own strategy, but only from the moment they take the hand, after the moment when we move from "HistWar : Les Grognards"!

But "modding" is not limited only to make scenario of battles. Thanks to the support of JMM, it is also possible to engage in "modding" more elaborate and introduce new units or new nations. Continuing the scenario that I have already published, I work out to a "modd" in order to dispose of the Prussians in 1814, and thus to be able to make the scenarios of Montmirail, Chateau-Thierry, Vauchamps, Craonne and Laon. I compiled all the explanations and diagrams of JMM. This manual that I got already includes no less than 18 full pages, is to say if JMM is not stingy with explanations! The construction of the modd is using a methodology proposed by JMM, which is highly structured: it is" sufficient "to create the files and to place the necessary information: the general file, the file units, etc...

And finally, it always falls to the same (and only?) Challenge: to have adequate historical informations…

What Battles?

After some trials and errors, my first scenario was the battle of Arcis-sur-Aube. I actually chose this battle because I had a fairly detailed map of this battle and it seemed to me easy to do ... A big mistake, since the order of battle was particularly difficult to make: The year 1814 is complicated for the French armies, and orders of battle are hard to reconstruct because the historical sources are found to be incomplete and contradictory.

My next publication was a series of historical scenarios focused on maneuver Brienne. The idea is to provide a consistent set of scenarios to replay all the fighting from the same maneuver, fighting historic but also uchronies (alternative scenarios unhistorical): here 9 scenarios on 6 different historical maps for replay the battles of Bar-sur-Aube, Saint-Dizier, Brienne, La Rothiere and Rosnay. The reason which prompted me to adopt this format, is always my approach historic : "HistWar : Les Grognards" simulates a battle, and so I multiply scenarios around a campaign or maneuver in order to have many different points of views and approaches to these historical events related to each other.
